011: Liz O’Riordan, MD | Breast Surgeon Becomes Breast Cancer Patient
In this week’s episode, I speak to Liz O’Riordan, an international speaker, broadcaster and award-winning co-author of “The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer: How to Feel Empowered and Take Control.” In 2015, at the age of 40, Liz was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer while working as an oncoplastic breast surgeon in England. In 2018, she had a recurrence on her chest wall and due to side effects from treatment, she had to give up her career as a surgeon.
We discuss what it was like to go from treating breast cancer patients to suddenly being a breast cancer patient, what it’s like to be a doctor with cancer, how she was able to move on from the only career she knew, and things she learned as a patient that she never knew as a doctor. Liz also speaks candidly about sex after menopause and how to get the intimacy back with your partner, as well as the best cure for cancer fatigue.
