Immune boosting tips to help prevent the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

I know with everything in the news about the Coronavirus and with schools, local events, sporting events, travel being canceled, etc…, it may be causing you to feel a sense of uneasiness, fear, and even isolation. I just wanted to let you know that I’m thinking of you and am very grateful that you are in my life and community. We all need each other’s support more than ever. I have been getting a lot of questions about what to do to avoid getting the virus. As you know by now, some of the things the CDC is recommending is to avoid large crowds, wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching your eyes and mouth and if you have to cough or sneeze, do it in a tissue and immediately throw it away.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’m all about boosting the immune system. This not only helps prevent cancer and other diseases but also helps in the fight against viruses. Here are some ways:

  1. Take Vitamin C.  You can start at 2000 mg a day and go to the level that your body best tolerates, increasing dosage until you experience loose stools. Vitamin C is non-toxic and water-soluble. so you do not have to worry about taking too much.  In fact, the Shanghai government is officially recommending high dose IV Vitamin C to treat the Coronavirus (COVID-19)
  2. Make sure your Vitamin D levels are optimized.  Most functional medicine practitioners recommend having them in the 60-80 ng/ml range, especially for those with a history of cancer and autoimmune conditions.
  3. Elderberry syrup is known to help boost the immune system and prevent viruses. However, if you have an autoimmune condition I would not use.
  4. Don’t panic.  When you are in a constant state of fear and worry you produce hormones such as cortisol and adrenalin that suppress the immune system.  You can try breathing exercises to help you relax.  These are my go to’s from Dr. Weil.
  5.  Move your body. Regular, moderate exercise can strengthen your immune system and help your body fight off infections and viruses.  Some of my favorites are walking, biking, hiking, and yoga. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity three days a week.

Most of all, in order to keep your stress levels in check, be prepared. Keep a two-week supply of imperishable food items in case you need to be quarantined.  Stocking up on toilet paper, tissues and paper goods is probably a good idea too:)
