A great way to stick with your health goals!

I recently went to a lecture given by one of my spiritual mentors about the Jewish New Year and wanted to share, as it is so appropriate for everyone to think about.

She said that the weeks and days leading up to Rosh Hashanah (Head of the Year) is a great time to take an accounting of how your life has been this past year, in terms of what you have accomplished, what you feel grateful for, what you did well and maybe not so well. She stressed that we should think about, and better yet, write down why we want another year of life. You see, we didn’t come here for easy or to stay comfortable; we came here to learn and grow, become better people and to make the world a better place.

This reminded me of a great exercise I did during a lecture series with one of my health mentors, Dr. Daniel Amen. He was talking about how to live a healthy lifestyle for the long haul, with no gimmicks or quick fixes. At the end of this particular lecture, he gave us a worksheet to fill out. He asked us to write down what we want for ourselves in the following areas:

  • Relationships (What kind of relationship do you want with your spouse, significant other, kids, family, friends?)
  • Work/Volunteerism
  • Money
  • Physical health
  • Emotional health
  • Spiritual health (Why are you on the planet? Do you have a mission or a sense of purpose?)

By concentrating on these areas we will be more mindful of our daily choices and will be better able to see if we’re on track with how we want to live our lives.

One of the examples Dr. Amen gave was that he wants a kind, caring, supportive, passionate relationship with his wife. However, his feelings don’t always coincide with what he wants. So, when he gets tempted to say something he shouldn’t say, he says to himself,” Does this help me get to where I want to go?”

This is a perfect exercise to do this time of year as we head into Fall.  My challenge for you is to try it. I know you will be happy you did!

And, when you see yourself getting off track with what you want, don’t forget to ask yourself, “ Does this help me get to where I want to go.”

Then you’ll know if your actions are aligned with what you REALLY want!
