How to handle fear when it comes to any health challenge

Lately, the topic of FEAR has been coming up a lot so I think it’s time to address it.

Whether you’re currently going through a health challenge or you’ve had one in the past, fear can rear its ugly head and try to get the best of you. If this is you, believe me, you’re not alone.

It may come up when it’s time for a scan, you need a specific test done, or you may feel afraid of what your future may hold.

Fear is not always a bad thing. It may not feel good at the time, but if you listen to it instead of ignoring it, you will not only learn a lot about yourself–you may just overcome it.

What you’re afraid of can be used as a catalyst for change.

I remember feeling really scared when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at the age of 29. My main worry was that I might not be around for my 2-year-old son and husband.  Then, when treatment was over I became afraid of recurrence.  Instead of having the fear paralyze me, I used it as fuel to lead a healthier life.

While fear can play an important role in taking action, we just need to make sure it doesn’t take over our lives.  Because it’s difficult to stay healthy and vibrant when we’re focusing on things we can’t control, not to mention panicking over.

So, how do you best deal with fear so it doesn’t get the best of you?

  1. Talk to your fear. Ask what it is trying to tell you as if it were a person. Then you can ask, “ Is it true?” “Is there a chance it’s not true?” You just may feel that what you’ve been afraid of doesn’t feel as scary.
  2. Try affirmations. “All is well.” “Everything is working out for my highest good.” “I am safe.” “I am perfectly protected.”
  3. Stay in the present moment. What is going on right here, right now is real, not our thoughts about what may happen. Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds and out through your mouth for 8 seconds. Repeat 3 times.
  4. Catch it and imagine the best-case scenario. When we worry about something, we often let our imagination run wild. When you have a thought that doesn’t serve you, pretend you’re changing the channel and focus on a positive outcome.
  5. Write down 3-5 things you’re grateful for. It’s hard to feel fearful and grateful at the same time.
