What to avoid in your personal care products

The skin is our largest organ and it absorbs all of the lotions and potions we use on a daily basis. According to research, the average person is exposed to over 126 toxic chemicals per day through their personal care products alone.

Now I’m not telling you this to make you worry, as worrying does absolutely no good for your heath, but my hope is that you’ll be empowered to make informed decisions when it comes to what you put on your body.

That being said, you don’t have to change everything at once. Any small change is helpful.

A helpful tip is to think about the products that give you the most exposure and concentrate on those first.

For example:

  1. Shower gel
  2. Lotions, face and body creams
  3. Shampoo and conditioners

Some ingredients to avoid:

  1. Parabens-can mimic estrogen in the body and have been found in breast cancer tissue
  2. Fragrance-often contains phthalates which can be disruptive to the endocrine system
  3. Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate-can be toxic to the nervous system, skin, eyes and lungs

A great place to check out the safety of your personal care products is on EWG’s Skin Deep Database.  You can see how they rate for things like cancer, immunotoxicity and reproductive toxicity.

With love and less toxins,
