Was cancer your wake up call?

How have you been? I hope you and your family are staying healthy, both physically and mentally! It’s been such a crazy, challenging time that I have struggled with what to write about. I know that I’ve used the last several months to really be introspective and take care of myself so that I can be more present for others. I’ve been reminded that sometimes it takes a “knock on the door” to wake us up so that we can learn, grow, and change our lives for the better. It’s those challenging times that we would never ask for that guide us to the way we want to live.

I remember when I was recovering from cancer, really thinking about what I needed to change in my life to remain healthy. My diagnosis was definitely one of those knocks on the door that really woke me up to how I was living. I intuitively knew that I just couldn’t remain the same person pre-cancer and remain healthy. I knew that I had to take a good hard look at all aspects of my life and make some changes. Some of them included a healthier diet and being more true to myself about what I wanted in my career and my relationships. You see, I wasn’t living with purpose and intention. I was just going down a path that I thought others wanted. I was trying to please others instead of myself, and my health was suffering.

Can you relate?

My hope is that it doesn’t take an illness, a pandemic, civil unrest, or a natural disaster to wake us up to really live the life we are meant to live; a life of vitality, purpose, and being of service to others.

What are some ways to get in touch with your true self?

  • Journal about what is important to you. What are those things that you think about often? How can you start living your life in a way that brings you closer to the life you really want? What are some action steps you can take to get closer to those things?
  • Write on a piece of paper all the things you’re ready to let go of. It may be fear, jealousy, pain, resentment, guilt, financial hardship, illness, etc…. Then take this list and rip it up or shred it—a ceremony of sorts to rid yourself of those things that no longer serve you.
  • Sit in quiet for 5 minutes a day and just be still.
  • Spend time in nature.

My challenge to you if you want a good, healthy, purposeful life is to start being true to yourself and those things that mean the most to you. And remember, If you just take one little step to get in touch with who you really are, you will be making huge strides!
