Can sugar cause cancer?

I don’t know about you but I am so ready for spring!  Living in Northeast Ohio, the winter is beginning to feel endlessly long.  Luckily, we’re at the home stretch!

During these long winter months, it can definitely be tempting to give in to cravings as we look for something to get us out of the long winter rut.

One of those cravings is high carb, sugary foods.

Can you relate?

That’s why I want to tell you about the research findings of blood sugar and cancer.

Although there is no evidence that sugar causes cancer, there is definitely a link showing that high blood sugar and insulin drives the growth of cancer.

In fact, if you have high blood sugar, high blood insulin, are pre-diabetic or diabetic, you have a 40% higher risk of recurrence or getting cancer in the first place.

Something not to take lightly, right?!

How do these conditions drive the growth of cancer?

  1. Cancer cells prefer to use sugar as their fuel, where normal cells do not. The more sugar available to cancer cells, the more they can grow and proliferate.
  2. Insulin drives tumor growth because there are a lot more insulin receptors on the outside of cancer cells than normal, healthy cells.

So what are some ways to manage our blood sugar and insulin?

  1. Get a simple blood test. HbA1c will determine your average level of blood sugar over a 2 to 3 month period. An optimal range is between 5.2-5.5.
  2. Eat low glycemic foods such as vegetables, berries, legumes, nuts and seeds.
  3. Eat protein, healthy fat and fiber at each meal to keep blood sugar stable.
  4. Avoid white, refined, simple carbohydrates (bread, pasta, white potatoes, cookies, pastries, white flour and sugar).
